Canon Powershot SD1100 IS Review

Review Summary

Review (Summary): "... The PowerShot SD1100 is an ultra-compact camera made almost entirely of metal. The camera is well put together, with the one exception being the "el cheapo" plastic door over the memory card and battery compartment. While last year's SD1000 had a bit of a "retro" look, Canon has gone back to a more familiar "perpetual curve" design on the SD1100.

... The Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS Digital ELPH is a competent ultra-compact camera that is a worthy follow-up to its predecessor, the SD1000. It offers a sleek design, optical image stabilization, snappy performance, and good photo quality. And, with a street price of around $230, you can cash in that "stimulus package" check and have money leftover for a tank of gas. ..."

Review (Summary): "... The camera comes as a replacement for the SD1000 (IXUS 70). The key features of this ultra compact aren't anything to write home about but the SD1100 promises to be another solid point and shoot tool coming out of the Canon stables. It combines an 8MP sensor with a 3x zoom (38-114mm equiv, optically stabilized) and lets you view images and menus on a high resolution 2.5 inch screen. ...

...The SD1100's Image quality is good for a camera in this class but not outstanding. The results at base ISO are reasonably clean and detailed but images get visibly softer at the long end of the lens. It's also obvious that Canon, like most of its competitors, has not found the magic potion yet to get rid of the two evils that haunt small sensor cameras: limited dynamic range (clipped highlights) and excessive noise at high sensitivities. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon PowerShot SD1100 IS follows up on its predecessor by adding optical image stabilization and a little more resolution, bringing the total to 8 megapixels. The SD1100 also aims to be trendier than before with its compact body and availability in spunky colors: Rhythm & Blue, Swing Silver, Melody Pink, Bohemian Brown, and Golden Tone. It will go on sale in March for $249. ...

... The Canon SD1100 is physically attractive, but its images aren't always as beautiful. Images look good when taken in bright light with the ISO set low, but images taken with high ISO settings are noisy and can look somewhat unpleasant. They are hardly suitable even in low-resolution formats for blogs and e-mails - much less for prints that will sit in an album for years to come. ..."

Review (Summary): "The Canon SD1100 IS Digital ELPH includes an eight megapixel 1/2.5" CCD imager and a Canon-branded 3x optical zoom lens with image stabilization, which covers a fairly standard range of 38-114mm equivalent - a moderate wide angle to a moderate telephoto.

... As with any digital camera that's as small as the Canon SD1100 IS Digital ELPH, there are compromises. But thankfully I didn't find many compromises in the nature of image quality, which was excellent. Naturally, as ISO increases, quality degrades, but we found the printed results to be quite good, with even the ISO 1,600 image preserving enough quality for a decent 4x6. ..."

PC Magazine 9.00 02-26-08 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): "How do you make the perfect follow-up to an already excellent camera? It ain't easy. Our current Editors' Choice winner, the Canon PowerShot SD1000 has a new sibling in the SD1100 IS, and not much has changed in the newcomer. The SD1100 IS ups the resolution to 8 megapixels from 7, has a slightly better LCD, and adds image stabilization technology. ...

... In the lab, the camera's performance was superb. Boot-up and recycle times were outstanding, coming in at 2.2 and 2.6 seconds respectively, so you can easily power on and snap off multiple shots in no time. Recording in movie mode at 640-by-480 at 30 fps was easy enough and produced very respectable image quality. ..."

Review (Summary): "... This very compact digicam features a 3x optical zoom lens with optical image stabilization, 8-megapixel imaging sensor, 2.5" PureColor II LCD screen and Enhanced Face Detection technology. As with its predecessors, it also features a VGA sized movie mode as well as several pre-programmed scene shooting modes to assist you in various shooting situations. ...

... The overall image quality from the SD1100 was good. When shooting outside on a nice sunny day, the camera's performance was excellent. ... However, when shooting on a typical cloudy spring day, the SD1100 ... slightly overexposes the sky in order to correctly expose the targeted subject. ..."

Trusted Reviews 8.00 03-30-08 Read Full Review
Review (Summary): The Canon IXUS 80 IS (Powershot SD1100 IS in the U.S.) has been reviewed by TrustedReviews.com. The camera features a 3x optical zoom, optical image stabilization, and features Canon's DIGIC III processor with face detection technology.

"This is a camera designed to appeal more to the fashion conscious than the connoisseur, and as such it serves its purpose. It's well made and very attractive, but is at the lower end of the IXUS range in terms of specification, features and price. Image quality is passable but I sometimes feel manufacturers try to impress too much with the gimmicks rather than get the fundamentals right first. ..."
